Tess woke up at her usual time every morning , always beating the alarm clock, but this morning was different she had slept right through her alarm , she turned to look at the time and could see she was going to be late for work no matter how fast she got ready, so she decided to take her time , if she was going to be late what would it matter now.
As Tess got out of bed she noticed that the room was in a right mess , her perfumes and make up that were always organised neatly on her dressing table were all over the floor, she took another look around and could see that her books that were on the shelves were also messed up, but what did this ? she thought everything was in its place last night as I went to bed, she didn’t have time to think any more about it , she was late enough for work as it was, she thought there must be a reasonable answer to this and carried on with getting ready for work.
once Tess got to work and made her apologies , and got on with her work but she couldn’t get out of her mind why was her room a mess, Tess is a very neat and tidy woman and everything has its place and it stays there, so what happened last night she thought, did I sleep walk? and why did i sleep in that is not like me at all she thought to herself , as the day went on Tess thought less and less about what she had seen in her room and carried on doing her job , by around 5.30 she had almost finished for the day , just as she had a call off her friend Helen she asked if it would be alright to call over that night , so Tess said yes and was looking forward to seeing her friend and having maybe few glasses of wine and a gossip as she had not seen Helen for a while , so she grabbed her coat and headed home.
It was around 7.30 when Helen turned up , she had bought wine with her and photos of her holiday to show Tess
they sat and talked and looked through Helens holiday snaps and had a few glasses of wine , when suddenly Helen jumped up and turned to Tess and said what the hell was that? something just touched me , Tess laughed thinking Helen was messing around , but she wasn’t she was very serious, something touched me Tess , something touched my arm , maybe it was the wine but the two girls now were a little spooked by this , especially as Tess had told Helen about what happened that morning, so there minds by now were working over time , a few more glasses of wine later the girls had calmed down and had settled down to watch a film before going to bed , Helen was staying over as it was too far to get home for her and she had drove down so there was no point getting a taxi home to come back for her car in the morning and it was Saturday tomorrow so they didn’t have work .
It was about 3am both girls were asleep , when there was a huge crashing sound , Helen woke up , the sound seemed to be coming from tess's bedroom , she walked along the hall way and started to slowly open the door , Tess was in bed fast asleep but what Helen saw was so frightening she closed the door again just for a few seconds , she called to Tess to wake up and opened the door again and called to Tess again and again, eventually she woke up and could see what Helen could see, above her seemed to be a white mist swirling over Tess and the bed and the force of the mist seemed to be knocking off things from her dresser and shelves , Tess sat right up looking right into the mist as if in a trance , Helen called her again , called her to get out but still Tess sat there just looking at this white mist above her, Helen at this point came in the room and for some reason she called out and shouted "what do you want ? why are you here? " slowly the mist seemed to calm and started to form a shape , the shape of a young boy , the two girls sat holding each other on the bed , as this little boy seemed to look at them , he almost looked as frightened as they were, as if they were the intruders not him , then suddenly the boy vanished , had Helen not been there Tess would of put it all down to a bad dream, but they both saw it and it was no dream....
the girls couldn’t sleep not after seeing that so they went down stairs and sat in the living room and started to talk about what they had seen, Helen wasn’t the type of girl to believe in ghosts and the after life but Tess was far more open minded about these sort of things, but there could be no doubt in Helens mind after what they had both witnessed, that there was defiantly some kind of ghostly presence in Tess’s house, and Tess was going to find out what ...and reluctantly Helen agreed to help .
Saturday morning came and went Helen had left at 10am still feeling scared but not quite beiving what she had seen even putting it down to the wine.
Tess decided to go to the local library, she wanted to find out anything she could about the area her house was built on, her house was a new house , only finished last year and she was the first to live there, she lived in what was known as zone one of a new housing project zone two had not been finished due to the building company going bust and now the local authority had taken it over and was going to continue to build the rest in the next few years, Tess got to the library and sat down at the desk in the corner and started to go through books of the local area there was a lot of books to look through but she was determined to find out,
After a hour or so she found out to her surprise that her house and the whole of zone one had been built on the same land that Dunn Hall used to be on it was a very grand house with acres of gardens but it was demolished in 1965 but had stood empty for some years before that as it was badly damaged in the war when it was directly hit by a German bomb , Tess carried on to read more about the old hall and how for a while it was used as a convalescent home for soldiers who were injured in the war, the owner of the hall a mrs fairbrooke who was widowed in the first world war and had opened her doors to the hall to the brave men who fort for king and country just has her husband had done. Dunn hall was a beautiful place with huge gardens and a orchard which made the place a ideal place to recover and recuperate, until sadly the hall was hit by the bomb , at the time there was seven soldiers staying at the hall with Mrs Fairbrooke and her staff and all of them died, Tess thought to herself how sad that was, the names of the men who died there were listed so Tess wrote them all down and decided she would investigate further, on the top floor of the library was the births and deaths and marriage records, Tess asked one of the assistants for a little help in finding the right records and fortunately the assistant was very helpful after a couple of hours of searching she found out that all the men had been buried locally except one, Joseph Dawson there was no record of his burial, Tess presumed that he was not local and had been taken by his family to be buried out of the area,
Tess decided to call it a day and go home, she was feeling tired from not having much sleep the night before and had promised to call Helen later to let her know if she found anything out , so she grabbed her coat and headed home........ |
